  1. Clean your dog’s bowls and food container. Doing this every other week will ensure harmful bacteria doesn’t grow and make your pet sick. Imagine not washing your plates or food storage containers between meals and you’ll quickly realize why this is so important.
  2. Use crunchy foods as teeth-cleaning treats. Give your dogs carrots, apples and other crunchy veggies and fruits. Your dog benefits not only from the fiber and vitamins, but also from having the plaque from their teeth rubbed off, reducing the likelihood of cavities and gum disease.
  3. Inspect inside your dogs’ ears. Check your dogs’ ears for any unusual discharge or smell once a week. Ear infections are the most common reason pets go to the vet and can cause permanent hearing damage. Read more tips on maintaining healthy ears here.
  4. Add water to your pet’s food. Adding some water when feeding your dog helps keep them hydrated. If you have a fussy eater, this can entice your dog to eat as it creates a yummy ‘soup’ from the water and kibble flavor.
  5. Weigh your dog. Weigh your dog once a month to ensure they are staying at a healthy weight. Overweight dogs experience the same health issues as humans, so keeping your dog at a healthy weight is an easy way to extend their life. Track your dog’s weight with DogLog to make sure it stays consistent over time.
  6. Know what’s “normal.” Has your pet’s behavior changed recently? Are they scratching more than usual? Are they eating more or less than they normally does? Changes from the norm could be cause for concern and indicate an underlying issue. If you notice abnormal behavior in your pet, give your vet a call to see if an exam is necessary. Track your dog’s health and activities with DogLog to figure out if their behavior changes over time.
  7. Affection. Establishing a strong bond with your dog is good for both of you. Cuddles, petting, belly rubs and even brushing their coat are great ways to show your pet some love. Not only does this strengthen the emotional connection with your furry friend, but it promotes your pet having positive interactions with other animals and humans.
